Holistic Hockey Challenge Rules

 

Roster and Players

• Please ensure that all of your players participating in the tournament are recorded on your FIRST GAME sheet. This will make them eligible to play in this tournament. 
• A maximum of 18 players can dress for each game, and they must be registered before their first game is played. 
• Each registered player MUST play in one round-robin game to ensure their eligibility to participate in the playoff rounds. 
• Please ensure you have a photocopy of each player’s birth certificate so it can be accessed at any time during the tournament. 

 

 

Coaches/Managers

• A Manager and/or Coach will be responsible for registering their team and staff before the start of their first game.

 

• All staff on each team must read and understand all the rules before the start of the tournament's first game. If you have any questions about the rule please email the tournament convenor for clarification. 

 

Rules for Safety

• All equipment worn must be CSA-approved - no exceptions. 
• All age groups must wear neckguards (without tape on them). All American teams are strongly suggested to wear them as well but are not mandatory per USA Hockey. 
• Tournament and equipment are governed by Hockey Canada rules and Alliance rules. 
• Players who receive a game misconduct during any game will miss the remainder of that game and be subject to being suspended for the entirety of the tournament after a review has been conducted by the Tournament Chair (or a representative of the Chair) and the tournament officials. 

 

Rules for each Game

 

• For each division in the tournament, the length of each game will be 10-12-15 minute periods.
• Before the start of each game, there will be a 2-minute warm-up for each team. 
• All teams are responsible for being ready 15 minutes prior to their scheduled start time for the entire tournament. 
• Overtime will not be a part of the Round Robin games. 
• During the playoff portion of the tournament, timeouts will be permitted in the Semi-finals and Finals. Each timeout will be 30 seconds in duration. 
• This tournament will be a non-contact tournament for all levels.
• If a team has a 5 goal lead or higher in the third period, this will result in the score clock being run with no stoppage. If the score is reduced to 4 goal lead at any time, stop time will be reinstated until the 5 goal difference is reached again. Running time will commence in the third period if a 5-goal differential and will run balance of game.
• Scores that our greater than 5 in the differential will not be displayed on the scoreboard. 

 

Posted Scores

 

• For each game played, there will be 2 points awarded to the winning team, 1 point awarded to each team in the result of a tie and no points awarded to the losing team. 
• For every division, the most a team will be credited with is a 5-goal difference at the end of the game. It will be 5 goals greater than the losing team. So if the final score is 12 to 5, it will read as a 10-5 victory. 

 

 

Playoff Format

 

If at the end of the Round Robin portion of the tournament, 2 or more teams are tied, the following sequential set of formulas will be used to determine the tie-breaker:

 

• Head to head with the winning team getting the higher seed unless there are 3 teams tied then the goal percentage formula will be the next avenue for the tie-breaker
• Goal percentage for each of the tied teams. The formulas will add the goals allowed plus the goals for and then divide that number by the goals for. Whatever team has the higher percentage will be the winner of this tie-breaker.
• Which of the teams has the least goals against will win the tie-breaker
• The team with the least amount of penalty minutes will win the tie-breaker
• The team with the most goals will win the tie-breaker
• In the unlikely event that all of these scenarios will be tied, it will come down to a coin flip to decide the team that finishes as the higher seed.

 

Once all teams have completed the Round Robin portion of the tournament, each team will be seeded according to their point accumulation per division.  

 

This will determine how the playoff portion of the tournament will be played. In the event of a tie at the end of the game in the playoffs, a sudden-death format will then be implemented. 

 

• The first format will be a 3 on 3 sudden death period for 4 minutes. 

 

• If a team gets a penalty, the opposing team will have a 4 on 3 for 2 minutes or less. 
• If that team does not score then it will be 4 on 4 until a stoppage in play and then the period will go back to 3 on 3 format. 
• If the game is still tied after the first overtime period then a 2 on 2 sudden death period will occur for another 4 minutes. 
• If a team gets a penalty, the opposing team will have a 3-on-2 for 2 minutes or less. 
• If that team does not score then it will be 3 on 3 until a stoppage in play and then the period will go back to 2 on 2 format. 
• If still tied there will be a sudden death shootout. The shootout will end when 1 player from one team scores and 1 player from the opposing team does not score. 

• Teams are not allowed to use a repeat player until everyone on the entire roster has had 1 opportunity in the shootout if needed.

For all teams joining us from outside the Waterloo Region and will need accommodation, please note that this tournament is a STAY TO PLAY.
